Begham Akhtar – Woh Jo Ham Mein

Introducing on ArtMAP the legendary Akhtaribai Faizabadi popular as Begham Akhtar. Born in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh, Begham Akhtar had her first public performance at the age of fifteen. They say she was a unique blend of talent and looks which not only made her an acclaimed classical singer but an actor, too.

However, Begham Akhatar gave up her career in acting as she was drawn more to singing. She chose her repertoire in primarily classical modes, comprised of a variety of raagaas, ranging from simple to complex. Her voice can make one imagine the ‘mahfils’ of olden days where courtesans danced to Thumris and Ghazals. Indeed, Begham Akhtar belonged to a community of courtesans. Those were times Indian culture was taking a sharp turn and it was difficult for Begham Akhtar to disown her past attachments with courts and live a modern respectful life despite her fame.

Begham Akhtar sang Thumris and Ghazals with equal elan and her compositions were reminiscent of rich musical tradition of Mughals. Here is one such classic composition, a Ghazal sung by her and rendered mainly using Saarangi, Organ Harmonium, Swarmandal and Tabla. And of course, it’s Begham Saahibaa’s voice that adds many a flovour to it. So.. hope you will enjoy.

Chitra & Jagjit Singh – Fasila To Hai

I am not really a Chitra Singh fan as I feel her voice is not tuned enough to classical or Ghazal singing. But she has sung some really beautiful compositions along with Jagjit Singh. Of course, quite a few Ghazals they sang together over a couple of decades ago are considered classics and are truly enjoyable. I am gonna post some of those gems soon. For now, this one is among the recent best of Chitra & Jagjit Singh.

Jagjit Singh – Woh Khat Ke Purze

This Ghazal is from the album “Marasim” which features a few beautifully written Ghazals of Gulzar rendered by Jagjit Singh. I think you will like the romantic strums of Guitar combined with the mild and pleasant sounds of Sitar which make this Ghazal memorable. This is my favourite in the album.

Ajay Pohankar – Shri Ganesh [Ahir Bhairav]

Pundit Ajay Pohankar is one the most acclaimed classical singers of modern times. His aesthetic and well structured presentation of notes in any form of singing has made place for him among the most sought out artistes. Even people who do not associate themselves with classical music have known him for his recent rendition – Piya Baawari.

Punditji underwent his musical training from a very young age and was groomed by none other than his mother Dr.Smt. Sumeet Pohankar of Kirana Gharana.  Bestowed with rich melodious voice with full command over modulation, his singing reflects the maturity woven with wide range of emotions he creates in his listeners. And here is an example for you.

This is a beautifully composed and rendered Ganesh Stuti in morning raaga, Ahir Bhairav. Listen to the chirping of the birds, bells of a temple, deep and serene sounding Pakhawaj in sync with Tabla, priests chanting Stotrams in the background, Shahnai setting the mood of morning while Ajayji sings the stuti accompanied by subtle keyboard chords and a divine sounding chorus.
