It’s a different experience listening to melodies like Paayoji Maine Raam Ratan Dhan Paayo performed on instruments like the Santoor, the Flute and the Guitar accompanied by both the Tabla and the Pakhawaj. This one scores over all other instrumental versions of this Bhajan thanks to a rich improvisation and excellent recording. Don’t miss!

Ahmed Faraz, considered one of the greatest poets of Urdu, passed away recently. Many Ghazals written by Faraz have been sung by the greats like Ghulam Ali. Here is one of the most popular Ghazals of Ahmed Faraz sung by Ghulam Ali. As a tribute to the great poet, I am posting the lyrics of the Ghazal, too.

There are not many artistes who have been Ghazal singers, film singers and pop singers. Hariharan has done all that and with elan. Singing Ghazals not only requires that you learn classical music but master Urdu pronunciation, too. Film singing, on the other hand, requires you to be musically flexible enough to be able to sing compositions that are often a blend of many a genre. And then, Pop music is Western and a lot different than Indian classical music.
Now, do you think exceling as a Ghazal singer, film singer and a Pop artiste is easy? Certainly not. Here is a public performance of a beautiful Ghazal by Hariharan in Raag Parameshwari. Worth a download.

Decades ago in Maharashtra, plays were massively popular and the most common events of public entertainment. Why? Because they had a lot of classical music which was popularly termed Naatya Sangeet. Unlike modern orchestras, Naatya Sangeet was performed mainly with traditional classical instruments like the Harmonium, the Tabla, the Sitar, the Flute and the Sarangi (though I am not very sure if Sarangi was used in Naatya Sangeet). If you are wondering what kind of music I am talking about, download and listen to this classic and very popular melody.
I don’t know the artiste’s name and feel guilty about it. If anyone of you know, please mention it in your comment.

Contining with the rich Marathi music, here is one more by Ravindra Sathe. This not an original performance of the composition. Most of the famous compositions have been sung by more than one artiste. Those days, we did not have today’s music recording technology. So you might find old records in mono rather than sterio. That said, there is no denying that original is always original. However, I am sure you will enjoy the modern renditions as well.

I am brinigng in more Marathi music as Abhangs have become popular on Artmap. I don’t understand much of Marathi but I understand music. Some of the best music is in the language of Marathi. There are thousands of people who do not understand Marathi and still enjoy Marathi songs, Abhangs, Naatya Sangeet, etc.
Here is a lovely song in Marathi sung by Sadhana Saragam. This song is not the original recording of the composition.

Pundit Jasraj needs no introduction. Even those who do not take interest in classical music know him thanks to various television shows he keeps appearing in. Besides his sangeet saadhana, that is, his mastery in singing, what I appreciate is he is an open minded artiste who gels well with all kinds of music including filmi music. It’s true that most classical singers frown at modern day music and it’s true that modern day music often does not sound like music at all. However, Pundit Jasraj seems to be one of the very rare music personalities who have come forward to meet the new generation, to see what they have to sing or perform and appreciate if that is good.
Here is a devotional rendered by Punditji with a chorus.

Another melody by Talat Aziz and Peenaz Masani. I felt that you might probably want to listen to another song by the duo after their ‘Ye Bahaar Keh Rahi Hai’. But don’t foget to tell me how much you liked or not liked what you got to listen to. I spend enough time bringing you music that I feel is worth sharing. So, I think I can ask a few comments from you at least.
