It’s a different experience listening to melodies like Paayoji Maine Raam Ratan Dhan Paayo performed on instruments like the Santoor, the Flute and the Guitar accompanied by both the Tabla and the Pakhawaj. This one scores over all other instrumental versions of this Bhajan thanks to a rich improvisation and excellent recording. Don’t miss!

Pundit Jasraj needs no introduction. Even those who do not take interest in classical music know him thanks to various television shows he keeps appearing in. Besides his sangeet saadhana, that is, his mastery in singing, what I appreciate is he is an open minded artiste who gels well with all kinds of music including filmi music. It’s true that most classical singers frown at modern day music and it’s true that modern day music often does not sound like music at all. However, Pundit Jasraj seems to be one of the very rare music personalities who have come forward to meet the new generation, to see what they have to sing or perform and appreciate if that is good.
Here is a devotional rendered by Punditji with a chorus.

Pundit Ajay Pohankar is one the most acclaimed classical singers of modern times. His aesthetic and well structured presentation of notes in any form of singing has made place for him among the most sought out artistes. Even people who do not associate themselves with classical music have known him for his recent rendition – Piya Baawari.
Punditji underwent his musical training from a very young age and was groomed by none other than his mother Dr.Smt. Sumeet Pohankar of Kirana Gharana. Bestowed with rich melodious voice with full command over modulation, his singing reflects the maturity woven with wide range of emotions he creates in his listeners. And here is an example for you.
This is a beautifully composed and rendered Ganesh Stuti in morning raaga, Ahir Bhairav. Listen to the chirping of the birds, bells of a temple, deep and serene sounding Pakhawaj in sync with Tabla, priests chanting Stotrams in the background, Shahnai setting the mood of morning while Ajayji sings the stuti accompanied by subtle keyboard chords and a divine sounding chorus.

Anup Jalota is called “Bhajan Samrat” not just because he sang hundreds of Bhajans but because he revolutionised Bhajan singing in India and abroad with the kind of music that can be called truly devotional. Composing music to Bhajans is not as easy as it sounds to be, nor is singing them. A Bhajan is supposed to inspire nothing but devotion in the heart of listeners but then music can inspire many a mood if you do not know what Raaga to choose, what tunes to compose, what Taal to set it in and how to render. Anup Jalota scores in his choice of Raaga, melodic composition and rendering the Bhajan. And that is why his Bhajans are massively popular and have become a synonym for the word ‘devotion’.
Here is one of his most popular Bhajans of all time set in Raag Kirwani. This Bhajan has been one of my favourites, too. And why not? It’s such a beauty!

~ Bhajan ~
aisi laagi lagan mira ho gayi magan
voh to gali gali hari guna gaane lagi
mahalo men pali ban ke jogan chali
mira raani divaani kahaane lagi
koi roke nahi koi toke nahi
mira govinda gopaala gaane lagi
baithi santon ke sanga, rangi mohana ke ranga
mira premi pritama ko manaane lagi
raana ne visha diya maano amrita piya
mira saagara men sarita samaane lagi
duhkh laakhon sahe, mukh se govinda kahe
mira govinda gopaala gane lagi
